Continuous Electrodeionization (CEDI) – Advanced Water Purification for High-Purity Applications
Continuous Electrodeionization (CEDI) is an advanced and environmentally friendly water purification technology designed to produce ultrapure, deionized water continuously without the use of regeneration chemicals. CEDI combines ion exchange resins, ion-selective membranes, and electricity to remove dissolved ions, minerals, and impurities from water, achieving high levels of purity suitable for industries like pharmaceuticals, power generation, microelectronics, and laboratories.
CEDI is a significant upgrade from traditional mixed-bed ion exchange systems, offering a chemical-free and cost-efficient solution for water deionization. It is often used as a post-treatment stage following reverse osmosis (RO) to polish the water to the highest quality standards.
The Continuous Electrodeionization process integrates the best aspects of ion exchange and electrodialysis. Water flows through chambers filled with ion exchange resins and separated by cation and anion exchange membranes.
When a direct current (DC) electric field is applied, ions migrate through the membranes — cations move toward the cathode and anions toward the anode. The ion exchange resins accelerate ion transport and maintain conductivity in the deionization chamber.
Unlike conventional ion exchange systems that require periodic regeneration using strong acids and bases, CEDI regenerates the resin electrically and continuously, eliminating chemical handling, waste discharge, and downtime. This leads to a sustainable and uninterrupted supply of high-purity water.
Chemical-Free Operation:
CEDI systems do not use acids or caustic chemicals for regeneration, making them safe, clean, and environmentally responsible.
Continuous and Automated Process:
The system operates continuously without shutdowns for regeneration, reducing operational interruptions and increasing productivity.
High Purity Output:
CEDI can achieve resistivity up to 18.2 MΩ·cm, ideal for applications requiring ultrapure water such as pharmaceuticals and semiconductor manufacturing.
Low Operating Cost:
By removing the need for chemical regeneration and reducing maintenance, CEDI systems minimize operational expenses and total cost of ownership.
Environmentally Sustainable:
With no chemical discharge, minimal water wastage, and energy-efficient operation, CEDI is a green alternative to traditional ion exchange systems.
Compact and Modular Design:
CEDI modules are lightweight, modular, and easy to integrate with reverse osmosis systems, saving space and simplifying installation.
Reliable and Long-Lasting:
The system’s durable construction and self-regenerating resin ensure years of stable operation with minimal degradation in performance.
CEDI technology is widely adopted in industries that demand consistent, high-purity water quality:
Pharmaceutical & Biotechnology: Production of Water for Injection (WFI), purified water, and clean-in-place (CIP) systems.
Power Generation: For boiler feedwater and turbine condensate polishing to prevent scaling and corrosion.
Microelectronics & Semiconductor: Production of ultrapure water used in wafer cleaning and chip fabrication.
Food & Beverage: Ingredient water purification and process water polishing.
Laboratories & Research Centers: Analytical water for testing and chemical preparation.
Industrial Manufacturing: Metal finishing, coating, and process water treatment.
A standard CEDI system consists of the following major parts:
Deionization Modules: Containing ion exchange resins and membranes for ion removal.
DC Power Supply: Provides continuous electrical current to regenerate the resins.
Flow Distribution System: Ensures uniform water flow across all modules.
Pre-Treatment System: Usually an RO unit that removes most dissolved solids before entering the CEDI stage.
Instrumentation & Controls: Includes flow meters, conductivity sensors, and control panels for monitoring water quality and system performance.
For best results, feed water to a CEDI unit should come from a reverse osmosis (RO) system, typically with conductivity less than 20 µS/cm. The CEDI system then polishes the water, achieving ultra-low conductivity levels (as low as 0.055 µS/cm).
Operating pressures are usually between 3 to 6 bar, and temperatures range from 10°C to 40°C. With proper pre-treatment and routine maintenance, a CEDI system can operate efficiently for more than 10 years with minimal membrane or resin replacement.
Traditional mixed-bed ion exchange systems rely on chemical regeneration, which is costly, hazardous, and time-consuming. CEDI offers a safer, automated, and sustainable alternative that delivers superior water purity. It reduces waste generation, eliminates chemical handling risks, and minimizes maintenance downtime.
By integrating CEDI into your water treatment process, you ensure consistent water quality, reduced environmental footprint, and significant long-term savings.
